I
began doing A.T. evaluations as an offshoot from the technology courses
I teach for speech pathology graduate students at St. John’s
University. I
was originally asked to provide an independent A.T. assessment for
a case that was eventually was resolved at the state level and where
I was asked to provide expert analysis. I soon found that were
only a handful of qualified evaluators in the region and there was
a need for evaluators. I have been called in periodically to districts
on Long Island for training or to provide an evaluation. Some of the
districts where this has been done are Jericho, Northport, Bayport-Bluepoint,
Patchogue-Medford, Southold, Mattituck–Cutchogue, and Greenport.
This has evolved into my being the regular A.T.
evaluator for some of these districts as well.
Assistive Technology
is often not a part of a special needs student’s
arsenal of compensations, even though EVERY student is supposed to
have it considered law. Too often the consideration at district
C.S.E’s are that the student does not need it without any assessment
of skills, evaluation of needs, or appropriateness of use.
To aid in helping
individuals who are interested in an independent A.T. evaluation,
I’ve created pages of materials that they might
find helpful. These pages are usually included in presentations
I have made on Assistive Technology to school district C.S.E’s
and related organizations. If you are looking for a speaker on the
topic please feel free to contact me.
